National kickoff Campus Fire Safety Month 2008

The launch of the fourth-annual National Campus Fire Safety Month took place on September 9, 2008 on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.  The 2008 campaign was co-sponsored by Campus Firewatch, the Ohio Fire Safety Coalition and the Congressional Fire Services Institute to raise awareness on campuses and in communities across the country.  Over 40 organizations have joined with us supported these efforts.

The Congressional co-sponsors for this launch were Congressman Bill Pascrell (NJ-8) and the late Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (OH-11).  Both have been staunch supporters of campus fire safety and have introduced a number of bills, including the Campus Fire Safety Right-to-Know Act, the College Fire Prevention Act, the College Infrastructure Act and resolutions recognizing September as National Campus Fire Safety Month. Tragically, Congresswoman Tubbs Jones passed away just weeks before the launch.

The event was a resounding success with over 70 students, parents who had lost children in campus fires, fire safety advocates and fire officials gathering together on Capitol Hill. A press conference was held before a packed room and teams of students, parents and others spread out across Capitol Hill and met with Congressional staffers to discuss fire safety issues.
